Mission

The mission here is simple: to create and maintain a honey bee colony to confer the benefits of pollenators to our lives and to the benefit of the community. Honey bee products are secondary to me but are essential contributors to health and vitality of those who use them.

Why we keep bees

I started Cedar Drive Bees as a hobby to make honey and explore other honey bee-derived products. What happened in our neighbourhood since I started the hive has amazed me. I had always heard the benefits of pollenators but creating and maintaining my first hive really drove the point home to me of the benefits that a single hive can bring to a community. We keep honey bees for a multitude of reasons. Beyond the delicious honey they produce, bees are essential pollinators, contributing to the health and vitality of our local ecosystem.

Local honey

Our bees produce delicious, local honey right here in Caledon Village, Ontario. Taste the difference of pure, natural honey.

Feeding kids locally-derived honey is considered to be beneficial to reducing pollen-born allergies.

The flavour of the honey is influenced by the local flora and we get different coloured and tasting honey in July vs. in September.

It's always of interest now to walk the area and see what mind of wildflowers and garden flowers are growing.

For instance, golden rod is late blooming and produces a clearer, almost colourless honey that is sweeter than July honey, which is generally darker ad richer in flavour.

Beeswax products

This coming year we will be producing bees wax products and exploring other honey bee products to harvest from our colonies.

Pollination

When we moved here 20 years ago, we had some apple, crab-apple and pear tress, but never any fruit. After about twelve years, I introduced my first hive and spent a couple of years learning about the bees and the difficult task of managing them and keeping them healthy, but then something wonderful happened! Our fruit trees had a much more brilliant and full blossom and we had our first harvest of pears! The next year we had some cherries and the year after that there was a tremendous crop of delicious macintosh apples from the tree in back. Ironically, our pollenator garden behind the house was full of bumble bees and many other types of bees, but few honey bees. The forest behind our yard was an annual onslaught of invasive weeds that we battled continuously, but even this changed with a strong bee colony. Now there are more wildflowers and golden rod and they are full of honey bees. Our neighbours lavender garden is full of my honey bees and neighbours a thousand feet away have richer floral gardens and report seeing more honey bees.

We are committed to sustainable beekeeping practices that protect our bees and the environment.
